Two Rivers Crab Cake Entree Two Rivers Crab Cake Entree Crab Cake Review

New to the Pasadena area is a steak and seafood restaurant called Two Rivers.  The idea is to bring fresh, local ingredients and chef inspired food to an area that generally caters to the lower priced family restaurant.  And while the concept is a bit upscale when you look at it on paper, the execution is very causal and family-friendly.  So how did their crab cakes fare?  Let's find out!

The jumbo lump crab cakes are 4 oz in size and served with tartar sauce and 2 sides, available as a single or double platter.  You can also get the crab cake as a sandwich with tartar sauce, lettuce and tomato.  As an appetizer, they have the mini jumbo lump crab cakes, fried golden and served with tartar sauce.

The entree is served on a bed of rice pilaf and a lemon wedge.  The cake is of the saucy variety and not very heavy on the bread crumbs.  Not much spicing in the cake, which allows that delicate crab flavor to come through.  The crab meat is a combination of lumps and shreds/broken pieces.

Generally, when folks mix the swimmer crab into their cake in order to keep costs down, it tends to be a bit heavier on the swimmer, which lowers the flavor profile (but results in a larger cake).  Two Rivers' crab cake pulls this off very decently.  While the crab is a mix of Maryland blue and blue swimmer (at least from what we were told), you can definitely taste the sweetness of the Blue crab.  The cake could use a tad more spicing for flavor variety and complexity, as the overall flavor does get to be a bit one note as you continue eating.  The texture is pleasant, and the amount of moisture is good without being too overly saucy.  Certainly worth your while if you ever find yourself in Pasadena!
