Bill Bateman's Jumbo Lump Crab Cake Crab Cake Review

If you've been anywhere around the area, you've more than likely come across a Bill Bateman's. They may be a corporate outlet, an express location, or a franchise. What started out as a single location on Harford Road back in 1987 has exploded into multiple locations around the area. Mostly known for their wings, they do have a wide variety of items on their menu. The big banner advertising Crab Cake Night caught our eye, and we just had to stop in. Should you go with the cakes, or stick with the wings? Let's find out!

Wednesday is their Crab Cake Special night, which is a jumbo lump crab cake, fries, and slaw for $10. Also on the menu is a crab cake sandwich. The regular dinner entree comes with two sides. Our review takes place on Crab Cake Night.

The jumbo lump crab cake is a saucy crab cake made with jumbo lump crab meat, held together by a small amount of breadcrumbs and a mayonnaise-based sauce with some spices. There are some lumps among the broken pieces. Binder is mostly sauce with the breadcrumbs to soak up some of the moisture. Cake is only cooked broiled.

The crab meat is somewhat flavorful. Not really all that sweet, somewhat meaty, but we've come across more flavorful crab. Because of the lack of crab meat flavor, the breadcrumbs take over as the primary flavor. While there is a little bit of spice to the cake, it could really use more. Also, our crab cake came out cold -- it certainly could have used a little more time in the broiler. While you can't pass up the bargain on a Wednesday night, the experience left a lot to be desired. Not the worst in the world, but certainly not memorable.
