Captain James Landing Classic Crab Cakes Captain James Landing Classic Crab Cakes Crab Cake Review

So, you're driving up Boston St in downtown Baltimore, or maybe you're just riding along on the Water Taxi, when suddenly, there on the corner, is a building shaped like a boat. Yeah, you know the one. Since 1978, the Captain James Landing has been serving crabs and quality seafood to residents and visitors alike. Steamed crabs always hit the spot, but if it's nice out, then you can just cross the street and enjoy them on the Crab Deck. But we're setting sail for crab cakes. Should we set sail, or abandon ship for them? Let's find out!

As one would expect, the Captain James Landing serves up crab cakes a few different ways. As an appetizer, there's the mini crab cakes, which are a smaller version of the Classic crab cake. If a sandwich is more to your liking, the crab cake sandwich serves a jumbo lump crab cake, broiled or fried, on a artisan roll or tortilla wrap, with fries. The main entree, however, is the Classic -- two crab cakes made with jumbo lump crab meat mixed with classic seasoning, baked, and served with rice pilaf and fresh vegetable. Or if you're feeling indecisive, the Seafood Platter also contains a mini crab cake.

One thing about the crab cakes here are that they're huge! We're guessing that they weigh in at about 8oz, and the entree comes with two of them! The crab cakes bind jumbo lump crab meat with bread, mayonnaise, red peppers, parsley, and spices. The crab is a nice mix of backfin and jumbo lump, whereas the binder strikes the perfect balance between mayonnaise and bread.

These crab cakes were awesome! As expected, the crab meat is nice and sweet, with that signature flavor of the blue crab. The binder keeps everything moist and gooey, while maintaining a mellow, unobtrusive flavor. The one thing we were surprised with was the spice levels.

Unfortunately, there just wasn't that much spice to accentuate the crab and binder flavors. There are Old Bay shakers at the table, so you are always free to add more, but there's just something about having the spice marry with the other ingredients as the crab cakes set and cook. The red peppers also seemed a bit out of place, but don't distract from the main flavors and does add some color. Really, these points are minor, though, so whether you drive, walk, or ride the Water Taxi, be sure to make the Captain James Landing your port of call for your next crab cake adventure!
