Wednesday has crab cakes on special until they're gone: $9.50 for one, $19.50 for two. Single comes as a sandwich or on crackers with a side of chips (default is on a roll, as I found out the hard way); Double comes with choice of two sides. Market price all other times. The sandwich did not come with cocktail or tartar, and hot sauce was not at the table. Double may come with condiments, but we did not ask. CASH ONLY!
The first thing you notice are the large lumps of Maryland blue crab. Breadcrumb filler glues it all together, but doesn't stand out. Very dense cake with a bready texture. Not much for spices, which allows all eyes to focus on the crab.
The crab cake could probably use a bit more sauce to make the mixture a bit more moist. On a roll, it would be a bit too starchy/bready. Not really much of an issue on its own. Otherwise, a very solid crab cake. One is nice and big, and should be plenty. If you need an excuse to take one with you, or you are super hungry, then go for two.
I upgraded the chips that came with my crab cake for fries. After sampling the fries, I can agree with the City Paper's award for Best Fries (2009).
Have you experienced Captain Larry's jumbo lump crab cake? Tell us all about it in the comments!
