DC Crab Cake & Co's Crab Cake Sliders DC Crab Cake & Co's Crab Cake Sliders Crab Cake Review

We've written about food trucks before. Frankly, we love them. There's nothing like getting out of the office for lunch and going to an outdoor food court that is different each day. Yet, food trucks are like the epic white whale - there one day, gone the next. Sure, you could use the various online methods of stalking your favorite truck. But with the sheer volume of food trucks on the streets these days, it is hard to keep up with them all, let alone know who is still in business and who is new to the scene. The DC Crab Cake & Co. truck is one of them. They've been around since late 2013, and already had food the first time we saw them. So we recently came across them and had to try them out. Was it worth the wait? Let's find out!

DC Crab Cake & Co offers more than just crab cakes, although the menu is limited. The Crab Cake Sliders are 2 MD style lump crab cakes served on a slider roll with coleslaw and remoulade. While we typically like to try crab cakes as they come, we decided to try the crab cakes plain. Because, honestly, cole slaw and remoulade just isn't our bag, baby.

Each of the crab cakes is about 2 oz. in size, and while the menu indicates lump crab meat, it was really more of a minced consistency with maybe one or two medium sized lumps in each cake. The crab is bound together with egg, bread, and spices. Served on a toasted potato roll.

When singled out, some of the crab meat tastes fine, but other parts taste a bit fishy. That tells us that either the crab was going bad, or blue swimmer crab was padding out the cakes (and overpowering the real crab). When you bite the crab cake as a whole, you mostly taste the breading and the butter that they greased the griddle with. While the crab cakes were moist, they were also a bit greasy. Eaten as a sandwich, the bun takes over, adding more bread flavor to a crab cake that already predominantly tasted like fishy bread.

Needless to say, we were not impressed. Definitely not worth the amount charged for such a bland crab cake. If they used better crab, didn't pad it out with blue swimmer, and let the crab flavor shine through and only have it accentuated by spice/binder, then it would be worth it. The remoulade and cole slaw may cover all of this up, but even with those condiments adding spice and flavor, you won't be tasting any crab.
