Old South Smoke House

Old South Smoke House Ribs & Crab Cake Old South Smoke House Ribs & Crab Cake Crab Cake Review

The Old South Smoke House is a local BBQ joint located north of downtown Port Deposit. If it wasn't for the neon beer signs, you might actually mistake it for someone's house. That house is actually a 200+ year old house that used to serve as part post office and part something else. The house was relocated to its current location, which comprises almost half of the restaurant. It's small, it's quaint, it smells like BBQ when you step inside, and they advertise crab cakes. Of course, that just means that we had to stop by! Follow along and see how our visit went!

The menu is pretty focused on BBQ, but crab cakes make a few appearances. There is the always classic Crab Cake Sandwich, which comes with Smokehouse kettle chips and slaw. Also on the sandwich side is the Crabby & A Patty, which is a crab cake topped with american cheese and tartar sauce, also served with kettle chips and slaw. On the entree side, there is a double entree, or you can add a crab cake to a rib dinner. Entrees are served with one side and corn bread. No choice was given as far as how we wanted the crab cake cooked (ours came out fried).

It should be noted that we added a crab cake to the rib night special, so the price reflected in the info fields below only reflect the up charge of the crab cake.

The crab cake was crispy on the outside, and moist on the inside. Crab meat was essentially broken lumps, bound together by a mixture of mainly mayonnaise, bread crumbs, and seafood seasoning. Not quite a saucy crab cake, but by no means was it Maryland style.

When we went to taste the crab meat, we were immediately stopped in our tracks by the seafood seasoning. There were a few larger lumps that gave us an idea of the quality of crab, but those were far few and between. From what crab we could taste, it tasted meaty as opposed to sweet, but still tasted like crab nonetheless. It was just the assault by the spice that we couldn't get away from.

At first, it wasn't so bad. At least it wasn't super salty. But as we went through the crab cake, the saltiness started building to the point that it was too salty by the time we were done with most of it. It wouldn't be a bad crab cake for the price if the seasoning would be toned down. Let the crab flavor come through, encouraging the flavors work together as opposed to against each other.
