Schultz's Crab House Backfin Crab Cake

Schultz's Crab House Backfin Crab Cake Schultz's Crab House Backfin Crab Cake Crab Cake Review

Last week, the CCR reviewed Schultz's Jumbo Lump crab cake. This week, we continue our review of Schultz's and try their other popular offering, the Backfin crab cake. In case you missed it, Schultz's has a history dating back to 1950. Originally a barroom, in 1969 the place has expanded to the establishment that it is today while still carrying on the Schultz name. We felt their Jumbo Lump crab cake was quite nice, but the backfin is certainly cheaper and was on special the night we stopped by. Is it as good as the Jumbo Lump? Let's find out!

The menu at Shultz's Crab House seems to be half crab cakes in some form or another. Just about any way you would want them (combo, platter, appetizer, etc.) is surely on the menu. They also offer two types of crab cakes: jumbo lump and backfin. Jumbo lump crab cakes are only offered broiled, whereas the backfin crab cakes are available broiled or fried. This review is for the backfin crab cakes.

The Backfin crab cakes at Schultz's are about as big as the Jumbo Lumps (6oz), but lean more towards a Maryland-style crab cake. Which means the binder is mainly breading, with some egg and spice mixed in to help bind it all together. Add some parsley in there for color, and you've got a good lookin' crab cake!

While our preference is towards jumbo lump crab cakes, we felt this was a very good option to have on the menu! The cake was made up of a mixture of good sized lumps alongside the backfin crab meat. Crab meat has a meaty texture to it, but still retains some sweetness. The larger lumps are the same lumps found in the jumbo lump crab cake. Spice levels are more intense in the backfin cake, but not to an extreme. Very well balanced and just what the cake needs to give it a nice flavor profile.
