The Prime Rib

The Prime Rib Crab Cake The Prime Rib Crab Cake Crab Cake Review

If it's a luxurious evening out on the town you are looking for, then search no further than The Prime Rib.  The Baltimore location was the first of the three locations in the area to open back in 1965, set to emanate the elegance of the supper clubs of 1940's era Manhattan.  Business casual is the minimum dress code, with most patrons in suits/jackets.  Live baby grand piano and string bass music fills the restaurant, creating the perfect romantic ambiance.  So why are we going to a restaurant specializing in prime rib for crab cakes?  Were we lured in by the claim of their recipe being "award winning"?  Or are we afraid of beef?  Continue on with the article to find out!

Crab cakes are available as an appetizer (single) or an entree (double).  Appetizer portion was reviewed, which was served along with tartar, lemon and house cocktail.

The crab cake is large, and what we consider to be "saucy".  The crab itself is nice and flavorful, but not overly sweet (not as sweet as other crab cakes we've had).  There is some spice in the sauce mix (Old Bay was the more pronounced flavor), but in low doses that highlights the crab flavor.  Trace amounts of breading were detected in the sauce, but again, nothing that detracted or stood out and more to add consistency to the sauce and hold things together.

Overall, this crab cake is fantastic -- just crab and a light flavor from the sauce.  Overall mouthfeel is creamy, if not velvety, and just melts in your mouth.  All that said, the flavor could have popped a bit more -- the crab could have been a bit more flavorful, especially compared to other places around Baltimore.  Other than that, everything else works amazingly well and won't disappoint.

Our recommendation would be to order this as an appetizer if you are itching to try it for yourself.  But don't miss out on the prime rib, which is ridiculously delicious even as leftovers (word on the street is that the signature entree weighs in at 22oz!).  The only disappointment of the night was the asparagus with hollandaise sauce.  The asparagus looked old, and the hollandaise sauce was reconstituted and otherwise flavorless.  Not really what you would expect from a top steakhouse.

Also, if you can, request Bob as your maitre d'.  His whimsical charm and attentiveness to service will be sure to make your evening as magical and wonderful as ours was.
