Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Bel Air

You may be more familiar with Little Italy when it comes to Italian restaurants in Baltimore. But up in Bel Air, the Buentempo Brothers provide a slice of Little Italy in Harford County. Located in the heart of Main Street, Buentempo Brothers has been knocking out their famous pizzas since 1991. Fresh dough and great customer service are only part of what makes this place special. So with great Italian food, we were excited to see crab cakes on the menu. Are they as good as the pizza? Let's find out!

Casa Mia's is a local chain of pizza shops which advertise they are the "home of the best crab cake in the world." While there seem to be a few Casa Mia's in the area, this particular chain has locations in Forest Hill/Bel Air and Nottingham/White Marsh. Claims such as the one they make always intrigue us, so we set out to the Forest Hill location to see if it is true. Read on to see what our experience was like!

Double T Diner

The Double T is a 50's style diner with 8 locations around the Baltimore area, half of which are open 24 hours a day. Back in 1959, partners Tony and Thomas opened the first Double T, which was then sold to the current owners in 1997. At the diner, you'll find more than just breakfast -- they serve everything from breakfast, salads, sandwiches, crab cakes, pastas, and Greek specialties. Wait, what? Diner crab cakes? That's what we said, but that is also what intrigued us to stop by and check them out. Read along to find out how they were!

If you're a fan of beer, and an even bigger fan of real beer, then you probably already know about DuClaw. If you don't (or you're not from the area), DuClaw is a local chain of brew pubs, priding themselves in real beers since 1996. Most people know DuClaw for their beer, but they also have food! The menu ranges between brewpub classics to culinary delights. And one of those culinary delights happens to be their Caribbean Crab Cakes. Did a Jamaican band come out of nowhere and sing us a song about eating crabs and cheering for beer, or should we send the dish down to the Bermuda Triangle? Only one way to find out. Read on!

Freddies Bel Air

Freddies in Bel Air has a striking resemblance to Dead Freddies in Ocean City.  Both have pirate theming, the logo is the same, and both have a pirate ship for the kiddies to play on.  But this Freddie isn't so dead.  Connection theories aside, the fact of the matter is:  you're not "downy ocean, hon!"  Nope.  You're in Bel Air.  But just because you can't make the trek across the Bay Bridge doesn't mean that you still don't have a hankering for a crab cake.  Luckily,  Freddie has your back (along with a fairly large outside patio area).  So does Freddie deliver on his crab cakes?  Or does this menu item need to walk the plank?  Ahoy, maties!  Come aboard, if you dare, and set sail for the land of crab cake reviews!  Aaarrr!!!
