Fat Boys Crab Shack Colossal Crab Cake

Fat Boys Colossal Crab Cake Fat Boys Colossal Crab Cake Crab Cake Review

It may be considered the end of summer, but it's not the end of crab season!  If you're a typical Marylander, crabs are certainly going to be part of your weekends until the boats turn up dry.  With so many places to choose from, why not pick a shack?  Enter Fat Boys to the rescue, located in Crofton not far off of Rt 50.  But while crabs are all well and good, we actually need to stay a little clean this time around (what with everyone wearing white pants for some reason), so crab cakes it is!  Does the Shack deliver, or should you stick to crackin' and pickin'?  Let's find out!

Crab cakes are available as a single or double platter, both served with your choice of side dish.  If that wasn't enough selection, you can also choose between the traditional and colossal crab cakes (the latter being the focus of this review).  Crab cake sandwich is also available (but that will just be a single).  Platters come with a side of tartar sauce and lemon wedges.  Tabasco available at the table.  There isn't any table service here, so order at the bar or by the register before sitting down.

The colossal crab cake is made of jumbo lump crab meat, bound together with bread and a creamy sauce mixture.  Not too much spice involved outside of the bread and binder.  Crab meat is mostly lumps with the obligatory few broken pieces.  Some pieces are super large, which come from a mutant crab, or are pieces of blue swimmer mixed in.

The crab meat is really flavorful, with some pieces tasting sweet, the others tasting meaty.  As mentioned before, not much by the way of spicing.  So aside from the crab meat, the only other predominate taste is the bread/sauce mixture, which tastes more like sweet bread than anything else.  It offers a nice balance to the crab meat, which is allowed to make its way through, but the amount of sauce could have been cut back a bit.  Side of Old Bay would be nice, so ask your server for a side.
