Hellas is a local Greek restaurant, located off of Veteran's Highway in Millersville.  But what you may not know is that Hellas is part of that well-connected ring of Greek restaurants that serve some of Baltimore's famous crab cakes, that you may think they all come from the same place.  (We're talking G&M, Timbuktu, and Romano's.)  But, while each may have a similar crab cake, they are all individual establishments, serving their own version of our beloved delicacy, as noted in a MD Gazette article from 2007.  So do Hellas crab cakes live up to the legend?  Let's find out!

Crab cake platters come with a choice of two sides.  A sandwich is also available, but the menu did not specify what side it came with.  A crab cake can also be added to any entree for an additional cost.  There are also crab cake sliders on the menu, which are 3.5oz jumbo lump crab cakes on a brioche roll with lettuce, tomato, pickle and mayo.

The crab cake is huge and has lots of jumbo crab lumps, with very little filler.  Not too many shreds or broken pieces.  Seems to be very little spice used, allowing for just the flavor of the crab meat to come through.  Binder appears to be more egg than mayonnaise, as a few parts of my crab cake came off as being a bit eggy.

Overall, this was a disappointing crab cake.  The crab meat was a bit dried out, especially around the outside edges where my crab cake seemed to have been broiled maybe a bit too long.   Flavor of the crab was very light, much like what you get when using the blue swimmer crab.  While it shouldn't be a crutch, a bit more spice could be used to make up for the lack of crab meat flavor.

The one thing I will say is that they have a FANTASTIC beer selection.  Very surprising for a Greek restaurant.  It's as if a beer geek runs the bar or something.  :)
