Lib's Grill Crab Cakes Lib's Grill Crab Cakes Crab Cake Review

Lib's Grill is a new venture from a well known Italian restaurant chain, Liberatore's. Instead of opening yet another Italian restaurant location, they opened a new raw bar concept (which happens to be a few doors down from one of their Italian restaurant locations). You'll find an extensive oyster bar, in addition to steaks, sandwiches, flatbreads, and seafood. Which, of course, includes crab cakes. Do they use the same recipe as their parent restaurant, or did they come up with their own unique take? Let's find out!

Crab cakes are available as a sandwich, an entree, or as an add-on. The sandwich is served on a sesame bun with lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce. Entrees are available broiled or fried as a double entree. Sides are not listed for any of the items, so you may want to ask if you're particular. Our entree just came with mashed potatoes and green beans.

The crab cakes are made with lots of lumps of crab meat, with not too many broken pieces inside. The binder is a bit of a mix of mayonnaise, bread, and spices. The cakes have some amount of moisture to them, but not to the point where it's dry. Almost, but not quite.

We wish our experience with this crab cake was better than it was, especially seeing how good Liberatore's crab cake was. While the crab wasn't severely broken up, there was a lot of cartilage to pick out. While you should expect some, this was to the point that it was interfering with actually enjoying our meal. They could have done a better job cleaning the crab meat before mixing the ingredients together.

If the cartilage problem wasn't enough, there was an overall lack of flavor. The crab had hardly any flavor at all, almost like it was frozen. The binder had a pasty, mashed potato consistency to it, which came across in both texture and flavor. Old Bay should have come in to save the day, but there was hardly any spice in the crab cake at all.

And to top it off, one crab cake was cold, and the other was actually hot. One must have dropped, as the beans and mashed potatoes were kind of cold as well. Now, it could be that we got the short end of the stick that night, and what we received wasn't up to standards but got out anyway. We'll hope that was the case.
