Morton's The Steakhouse

Morton's Crab Cake BLT Morton's Crab Cake BLT Crab Cake Review

What started out as a steakhouse in Chicago in 1978 has since turned into a global chain of high-end steakhouses. Morton's is synonymous with quality, consistency, and hospitality. Constantly receiving awards for both their food and their service, Morton's is definitely an experience, whether it be for a power lunch, a special occasion, or because your in the mood for a really good steak. And what goes better with steak than seafood? In our case, that seafood would be in the form of a crab cake! Do their cakes match their steaks? Let's find out!

While all locations are open during normal dinner hours, a select few locations are also open for lunch. Crab cakes on the lunch menu (at least the one we visited in DC) include the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake appetizer, and the Crab Cake BLT. The dinner menu includes the same appetizer, but replaces the sandwich with crab cake entrees, either as its own entree, or paired with other items (steak, shrimp, etc.). Check your local menu to see what is available. For this review, we went with the Crab Cake BLT during the lunch hours.

The Crab Cake BLT is a 4 oz crab cake, topped with lettuce, tomato, bacon, and a caper dill mayonnaise, alongside matchstick fries. The cake itself is comprised of mostly large lumps of crab, bound together with breadcrumbs, mayonnaise, Dijon, and spices. The crab cake is sautéed, and flattened a bit, so some of the large lumps are broken up, but for the most part it's not too bad.

While not as big as you would typically expect a crab cake to be at a high-end restaurant, the quality is certainly there. The crab meat is nice and sweet, while the binder gives off a nice, muted, buttery flavor. The Dijon hits on the back end, lingering along with the buttery binder, leaving a nice reminder of what you just ate.

This crab cake works well by its self, as well as on a sandwich. The bun for the BLT is super tasty, and the bacon adds a nice hint of saltiness to the mix, as well as providing a bit of a crunch. Lettuce and tomato are both fresh and crisp, making the sandwich experience that much better. We oped for no mayonnaise, but we're sure it was equally as tasty.

The only compliant that we can think of is that the size of the crab cake itself is pretty small, especially for the price. I know you pay for the name and the experience, but even steakhouses of similar caliber made it more worth your while. But, if you are looking for something to keep your aged beef company, then this crab cake should do just fine.
