Crab Cake Review
The Rams Head Tavern in downtown Annapolis has a long history dating back to the early 1700's. You can feel that history as you make your way through the downstairs Tavern, past the Tea Room and out to the patio. And as you walk through the downstairs, check out the plaques bearing the names of the many members of the World Beer Club (of which, yours truly is a member). While known for their immense selection of beers, as well as being home of the Fordham Brewing Company (where they brewed the beer until the moved to a larger facility in 2003), you may not know that they also have some pretty decent food. Crab cakes are on the menu, so we're out to see if they pair well with the beer. Did they? Read on!
The Harvest Moons are two 5oz jumbo lump crab cakes broiled and served over a roasted corn and bacon salsa, paired along with a baked potato. There is also a sandwich available, served broiled on a toasted brioche. If that wasn't enough, they also serve a crab melt, which is a crab cake, sliced tomato, and Munster cheese on a crostini.
The crab in the cakes is mostly big lumps, with some broken pieces about. Definitely a Maryland style crab cake, which is heavier on the breading in the binder. Not a saucy cake in the least. Binder is mostly bread, although we did detect a hint of Dijon in the mix.
The crab flavor is pretty decent. Not overly sweet, but meaty with some sweetness to it. Because the binder is heavy on the bread, there wasn't much moisture to the cake, and fell apart pretty easily like baked stuffing. The Dijon adds some complexity to the flavor profile, which was a nice touch. Everything mixes well together with the corn and bacon salsa.
Overall, a really good crab cake despite the lack of moisture within. The amount of spice was nice and complimented the flavor of the crab meat well. The double platter with the huge potato was quite a meal, so if you're not that hungry, go for the sandwich, or ask if there is a single platter option (one wasn't listed on the menu).
