The Crab Cab's Crab Cake Sandwich The Crab Cab's Crab Cake Sandwich Crab Cake Review

There are a few great things to love about food trucks. They tend to focus on one thing and do it well; you get affordable culinary-quality food; and they move about, so if you have someplace nearby where you work, say like Farragut Square, you get the best food court you could ask for that constantly changes. While on such a food truck adventure, we came across The Crab Cab, who is relatively new to the DC food truck scene. They bill themselves as a 5-star mobile "restaurant" who is affordable, and uses the freshest ingredients. Not only that, but they also cater. The Twittersphere has nothing but good things to say about The Crab Cab, so we decided to check them out. Was it as "crabtastic" as they say? Let's find out!

The Crab Cab offers crab cake sandwiches by themselves, or as a combo with fries and coleslaw. They offer the regular crab cake, 4 oz. crab cake sliders, or a crab cake and shrimp sandwich, amongst other offerings. Cocktail, tartar, or house made sauce is available.

The crab cake is a saucy cake, made with fresh lump crab meat, bound together with mayonnaise and spices. A good portion of the cake is whole lumps of crab, with a healthy dose of binder. Spice is visible on the outside of the cake, but not so much within the binder. What was probably most different than any other crab cake was that it was football-shaped to fit into the potato hot dog bun. The crab meat by itself had a nice, sweet flavor to it, and the spicing works alongside that beautiful crab flavor. But the roll is very sweet and buttery, which ends up overpowering the crab flavor. The binder is very neutral, leaving the spice and crab meat to do their thing uninhibited.

We're not sure why this is called a crab cake, as it turned out to be more along the lines of a crab roll (much like the Feelin' Crabby food truck we've reviewed in the past). The crab cakes are warmed up on a flat top until the outside gets a sear on it, then it's served in the bun. Unfortunately, ours was still cold in the middle, which lead us to ask ourselves why bother warming it up in the first place? The bun is what really killed the crab cake for us. Not only was it soft, flimsy, and hard to handle, it was too sweet (we believe they use King's Hawaiian rolls, or a very similar product). Almost a doughnut-like sweetness. It really needs to be more neutral in flavor, but solid so you're not eating crab meat out of your lap.
