The Seafood Boss' Crab Cake The Seafood Boss' Crab Cake Crab Cake Review

Food trucks can be a wonderful thing. We like to think of them as a roving food court that typically changes assemblages daily. One one such stroll down the food trucks at Franklin Square, we noticed The Seafood Boss. "Home of the All Lump Crab Cakes" that are also world-famous and award-winning. With claims like that, you know that the CCR had to check them out in our quest to find decent crab cakes in DC. Follow along as we sample their crab cakes and see what the hubbub is all about!

The Seafood Boss' truck menu looked like it differed from their website's menu, so only use their website as a guide. In any case, you can get crab cakes as part of a platter, or as a side. For our review, we got a single side crab cake.

The crab cakes from the Seafood Boss are made with all lump crab meat, bound together with a mayonnaise-based binder, and maybe a bit of breadcrumbs and a small amount of spice. Crab cakes are only served grilled.

When we first received our order, we didn't know what to think. Yes, they're made of crab meat, but the crab lumps are basically all minced up. And while it is in a cake form, it's more like a crab pancake than the crab cakes that you come to think of from Baltimore. The crab meat itself tasted kind of bland, with no real sweetness to it. And if spices were added to the mix, it was hard to taste it. Mostly you taste the oil that the crab cakes were grilled with.

Now, the odd part is, we couldn't stop eating this crab cake. Was it anything special? No, not really. If anything, it was a reminder that DC doesn't really know what crab cakes are all about. But it's actually tasty enough that you'd find yourself eating it up without any explanation to it, even if it is fairly expensive for what you get.
