If you're a fan of beer, and an even bigger fan of real beer, then you probably already know about DuClaw. If you don't (or you're not from the area), DuClaw is a local chain of brew pubs, priding themselves in real beers since 1996. Most people know DuClaw for their beer, but they also have food! The menu ranges between brewpub classics to culinary delights. And one of those culinary delights happens to be their Caribbean Crab Cakes. Did a Jamacian band come out of nowwhere and sing us a song about eating crabs and cheering for beer, or should we send the dish down to the Bermuda Triangle? Only one way to find out. Read on!
The Caribbean Crab Cakes is a double platter of crab cakes made with fresh MD Blue crab, roasted, grilled, and topped with mango salsa and served with two sides. The menu doesn't mention a single platter option, but you might be able to ask your server if there is one. If you're not into single or double platters, then a crab cake slider also available.
The crab cakes are of your bready Maryland style cake. The crab meat has a nice, decent flavor, not as sweet as fresh Maryland Blue could be. The spicing is light, and hits on the back end as a light note. But the binder/filler is very bready, but has a nice buttery flavor to it. The salsa adds some sweetness to the mix, which is actually kind of nice.
The overall flavor of the crab cake is a bit muted, so the contrast in flavors from the salsa is a good thing. However, the seasoning could be more, and the crab could have a bit more flavor (although you can't really control that too much). Our impression was that it tastes more like crab stuffing than a crab cake. Overall, not bad, but nothing that really made an impression.
