Pelican Cove Jumbo Lump Crab Cake Pelican Cove Jumbo Lump Crab Cake Crab Cake Review

Pelican Cove is a restaurant in Abingdon, MD (just outside Bel Air) that bills itself as a fine seafood restaurant.  But fret not, it's not all white tablecloths, matire d's, and valet parking.  No, it's about as fine seafood as you would want up around these parts, with a nautical theme.  It's not just seafood, as they do have your other standard restaurant fare on the menu as well, including steaks, chicken, and pasta.  And, naturally, they have crab cakes.  So we fought our way past the lure of Wine World, past the whimsy and challenge of Putt Putt Golf & Games, and ventured in.  Were they worth the trip?  Read on and find out!

The jumbo lump crab cake entree is a 1/2 lb cake, made with an exclusive recipe consisting of jumbo lump crab and secret seasonings.  Comes served with two sides.  A sandwich is also available, titled under a different name, but is the same crab cake as the entree.  If that's not enough, crab balls made with backfin crab meat are available as an appetizer.  Dinner entree served with lemon wedge and tartar sauce.

Breaking into the cake, we first noticed that the crab cake was indeed mostly jumbo lumps of crab, along with the few expected broken pieces.  Not much else aside from a light bread binder and spices.

Crab meat is really sweet and tasty -- usually you don't find this quality of crab in the size of the cake being served without it being mixed in with a lesser grade of meat.  Bread binder adds a different level of sweetness to the flavor profile, resulting in a nice, buttery texture.  Works very well together.  You don't notice the spicing so much on the front end, but some does hit you on the back end.  While our cake could have been a little warmer in the center, it was at least perfectly cooked everywhere else, with no dryness on the edges.  Get the Old Bay fries as one of your sides, and you'll be in for a treat!

I have had a lot of crab cakes all over Maryland and Virginia but Pelican Cove Seafood ranks up in the top 5. The broiled crab cake was delivered to my table steaming hot (best way to eat a crab cake). It had absolutely no filler in it, and what I mean by filler is breading to save money. The crab cake was 100% pure jumbo lump crab meat with a bit of spicy old bay seasoning mixed in. I recommend Pelican Cove's Broiled Crab Cake Platter any day of the week for quality taste. It comes with an 8oz crab cake and 2 healthy portioned sides for 20 Dollars~
